A happy home is a healthy home. As media coverage about the health effects of the indoor home environment increases, more homeowners are becoming aware of this old adage. As a result, renovators are incorporating healthy home practices, which are used to improve the environment in your home’s interior, into their remodeling projects.
Advantage Contracting, a top home addition contractor, lists down some of the healthy home practices being practiced by an increasing number of remodelers.
Non-Toxic Paints and Building Materials
The Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University (JCHS) and the Farnsworth Group’s online survey of 1,751 homeowners, 718 renters, and 579 remodeling contractors in 2018 found homeowners and renters rarely named asbestos and lead paint as environmental concerns despite their significant health risks.
In contrast, asbestos and lead paint, alongside the wider issue of toxic materials, were what remodelers, including home addition companies, were most concerned about, with six out of ten remodelers using non-toxic paints and building materials during home remodeling work.
Water Filtration System
Water filtration systems are the second most popular home healthy home practice observed by remodelers in the survey. This is in line with the finding that nearly 40% of the homeowners and renters surveyed have concerns about their water quality.
Central Vacuum System
A central vacuum system can improve indoor air quality by ensuring dust or other airborne particles recirculate. Despite homeowner and renters’ concerns over indoor air quality, with nearly half of them saying they’ve changed their air filters and roughly 40% saying they’ve removed mold or intend to do so, a central vacuum is one of the less popular healthy home practices among the remodelers surveyed.
Regardless of any trend, the health of a home’s occupants should always be prioritized by contractors.
